Band Together for Give Miami Day

Give Miami Day 2016

With Give Miami Day on the horizon, it’s time to recommit ourselves to supporting organizations that are doing good in our communities. With the current state of political affairs, who knows whether federal and state funding will be available to support local initiatives that make a big impact.

Thankfully, we still have the power to help shape our communities through service and philanthropy. That’s where Give Miami Day comes in.

Give Miami Day is a 24-hour online donation drive sponsored by The Miami Foundation. Last year, it raised more than $7 million for over 600 South Florida nonprofits.

Give Miami Day 2016 is on Thursday, November 17.

So with that said, just give if you can. The minimum donation accepted is $25, and you can designate it to one of the many active nonprofits in South Florida. You can:

Give for Accessible Health Care

Because poor health and lack of health education can affect every aspect of a person’s life.

  • Miami Beach Community Health Center
  • Planned Parenthood of South Florida
  • The Women’s Breast & Heart Initiative

Give for The Arts

Because when shit hits the fan, we always need artists to interpret what’s going on and bring a bit more beauty into this world.

  • Borscht Corp.
  • Delou Africa
  • The Rhythm Foundation
  • National YoungArts Foundation

Give for Children

Because they need opportunities to flourish if we’re going to have any hope.

  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami
  • Guitars Over Guns
  • Overtown Youth Center
  • Thomas Armour Youth Ballet
  • Voices for Children

Give for Civic Engagement

Because we need to have an informed, empowered electorate and to support those who work to uphold our rights.

  • ACLU of South Florida
  • League of Women Voters of Miami-Dade County
  • The New Florida Majority

Give for the Environment

Because South Florida has one of the most unique ecosystems in the world, and it deserves to be protected.

  • The Everglades Foundation
  • Urban Paradise Guild
  • Virginia Key Beach Trust

Give for Housing Services

Because if a person doesn’t have safe, stable shelter, it’s so much harder to advance in other areas of life.

  • Lotus House Women’s Shelter
  • Haitian American Community Development Corporation
  • Miami Rescue Mission

Give for Immigrant Rights

Because we all deserve to be treated with dignity.

  • Americans for Immigrant Justice

Give for the LGBTQ Community

Because, hello, we all deserve to be treated with dignity.

  • SAVE Foundation
  • Pridelines Youth Foundation

Give for People with Disabilities

  • The Arc of South Florida

This is just a small sample of the nonprofits participating in Give Miami Day. If none of these align with your interests, you’re bound to find one that does.

To donate or browse the full list of nonprofits, visit the Give Miami Day website. You have from 12:00 am to 11:59 pm on Thursday, November 17, 2016. Be sure to also follow the action on Instagram and Twitter using #GiveMiamiDay.

If you don’t have the means to donate, you can still use the other 364 days of the year to give your time and talents. If we’re going to build better communities, we need everyone to get involved.
