Hey, Miami, It’s Ryan Adams!

Ryan Adams

Who are you listening to?

Ryan Adams.

Isn’t he the guy that did that Robin Hood song?

No, RYAN Adams. Not Bryan Adams.

Oh.

Like a lot of Ryan Adams fans, I’ve had this conversation many times. I first heard of the talented, prolific, genre-bending rocker while I attended college in Texas. Armed with an acoustic guitar and brooding, reflective lyrics, he seemed like the one person under which hipsters, weirdos, emos, frat bros, and preppies could unite. I was mesmerized with his singing and songwriting, and he quickly became one of my favorite artists.

So imagine my excitement when I learned he added Miami to his 2015 U.S. tour. He’s never played down here in the nine years since I’ve been back, and even with 15 studio albums to his name, I still have to explain that he’s not the guy who sang “Summer of ’69.” So, for the uninitiated and curious, here’s 12 songs to ease you into his world before his show tomorrow at The Fillmore Miami Beach.

Bonus Track: Jimmy Whistlenut

In addition to singing about lots of feelings, Ryan Adams is known for his unique sense of humor. Which brings us to this gem, “Jimmy Whistlenut,” about trippin’ on ‘Tussin and crack in outer space.

Bonus Track: Summer of ’69

He finally gave in! Bryan Adams should be proud.

RYAN Adams plays at The Fillmore Miami Beach at Jackie Gleason Theater this Thursday, May 7, 2015. Jenny Lewis opens. General admission tickets are $54. Doors open at 7 p.m., show starts at 8 p.m.
